Minimum orders and wholesale laptop pricing
Why there is rarely one fixed minimum, what actually moves the price per unit, and how to write an enquiry that gets a real quote back.
"What's your minimum order?" is the first question most new buyers ask a wholesale supplier, and the answer is rarely a single number. This explains how wholesale laptop pricing actually works, so you can ask for the right thing and judge whether a quote is fair.
Why there is rarely one fixed minimum
Laptop distribution runs on thin margins and fast-moving stock. A supplier's willingness to sell ten units rather than a hundred depends on which model it is, how much of it is sitting in the warehouse, and whether you are likely to come back. A model in deep stock can often be sold in small quantities; a scarce model usually cannot.
In practice, wholesale starts at pallet quantity. A pallet of laptops is commonly in the region of 40 to 80 units depending on box size, and it is the unit freight and warehouses are built around.
How trade price is calculated
| What moves the price | Effect |
|---|---|
| Quantity per model | The single biggest factor. Ten units of one model price better than ten units spread across five models. |
| Model and configuration | High-demand configurations carry thinner discounts than slow-moving ones. |
| Stock position | Units already in the warehouse price better than stock that must be brought in. |
| Payment terms | Payment before dispatch usually earns a better price than extended terms. |
| Repeat business | Regular buyers get first call on allocation and sharper pricing over time. |
What to send to get a real quote
The difference between a reply in an hour and no reply at all is usually the quality of the enquiry. Send:
- Brand and model — for example "HP 15-FD0531", not "HP 15-inch"
- Configuration — processor, RAM, storage, screen
- Quantity per model
- Destination city and port
- Timeline — when you need it to ship
If you don't know exact model numbers, say what you need in plain terms — "i5, 8GB, 512GB business laptops, around 100 units, for a retail chain in Lagos" — and a good distributor will come back with the models they actually have that fit.
Why prices are quoted, not published
Any wholesale price list is out of date within days. Stock moves, currencies move, and the price for 20 units is not the price for 500. Suppliers who publish fixed trade prices publicly are usually either retailing at a markup, or quoting prices they cannot honour at volume.
Mixed orders
Most real orders are mixed: a few models in different quantities, consolidated into one shipment. This is normal and usually cheaper than placing separate orders, because freight is shared.
